# Water tank inspection checklist

This is a monthly check of a building's water storage tank from the outside: is the level right, does the water look clean, and are the cover and vents secure? Print the checklist below, or use the same template on a phone in MintCheck.

## Water tank check (Monthly)

Level, water quality and hygiene

| Item | Result |
| --- | --- |
| Level & water supply | ☐ |
| Water quality (visual) | ☐ Good ☐ Debris ☐ Contamination suspected |
| Cover & vent hygiene | ☐ |
| Notes | |
| Overall result | ☐ Normal ☐ Abnormal |

## How to do each check

Never climb into a tank for this check. A tank is a confined space, and going inside needs training and a proper entry procedure.

### Level and water supply

Read the level gauge or indicator, and check that water is reaching the building normally. Look for pump alarms and for water coming out of the overflow.

### Water quality (visual)

Open the inspection hatch only if you have been shown how, keep your hands and tools out of the water, and shine a light in from outside.

- **Good:** the water is clear, with nothing floating in it and no smell.
- **Debris:** you can see dirt, particles, insects or sediment.
- **Contamination suspected:** the water is discolored or smells, or there is an oily film or a dead animal.

A look at the water can't show that it is safe to drink. Water testing is a separate job.

### Cover and vent hygiene

The hatch is closed and locked, with its seal intact. Vents have a fine screen with no holes or gaps. Look for signs of insects, birds or rodents, and keep the area around the tank clean and dry.

### Notes

Write down anything else, such as stains or leaks on the tank, or the dates of the last cleaning and water test.

## How often to check

This template is set to monthly. How often a tank must be cleaned and the water tested depends on your country, the type of building and what the water is used for, so check the rules that apply to you.

Cleaning and water testing are separate jobs, often for qualified companies.

## If something is wrong

1. Mark it on the checklist and describe the problem. A photo helps.
2. If you suspect contamination, tell the person responsible right away and warn people not to drink the water until it has been checked.
3. Close and lock the hatch, and call your tank cleaning company or water supplier. Your local rules may also say who must be told.
4. Check it again after the fix and record the result.

## Use this checklist in MintCheck

1. In **Checklists**, click **Add checklist** and pick the water tank template. Its items and monthly schedule are filled in, and you can change them before you save.
2. In **Assets**, click **Add asset**, pick the water tank template and link the checklist.
3. Click **Print QR** and put a label on or next to the tank, or at the door of the tank room.
4. Workers scan the label, answer the items and mark the result **Normal** or **Abnormal**. They can attach photos.

An **Abnormal** result stays **Unresolved** until a re-inspection confirms the fix, and the site dashboard shows completed inspections against the planned number.

Cleaning and water tests come round less often, so give them their own checklist. Set its **Period** to **Yearly**, pick the months, and link it to the same asset. Workers who scan the tank then see both checklists, and the yearly job appears in the plan on its due day. To keep a picture of the water with each check, add an **Image** item.

MintCheck is free for up to 5 assets with no credit card, so you can try this with your tanks and a few other assets.

## Common questions

### How often should a water tank be inspected?

This template uses a monthly check as a starting point. Required intervals for inspection, cleaning and water testing differ by country and type of building, so check the rules that apply to you.

### Can a visual check show that the water is safe to drink?

No. It can only show problems you can see or smell. To know whether water is safe to drink, have it tested.

### Can staff go inside the tank to check it?

Not for this check. A tank is a confined space, and going inside needs training and a proper entry procedure. Your local rules may say more.

### Does this checklist replace tank cleaning or water testing?

No. It is a routine check and a starting point, not a statement of compliance. Cleaning and water testing are separate.

### Can I schedule the yearly cleaning as well?

Yes. In MintCheck, create a second checklist with a yearly schedule and link it to the same asset.
