# Fire alarm inspection checklist

This is a monthly check of a fire alarm system: does the panel show normal, do the detectors respond, and does the alarm sound? Print the checklist below, or use the same template on a phone in MintCheck.

## Fire alarm check (Monthly)

Panel, detectors and alarm

| Item | Result |
| --- | --- |
| Panel indicators normal | ☐ |
| Detector function test | ☐ Normal ☐ Partly faulty ☐ All faulty |
| Bell/siren sounds | ☐ |
| Notes | |
| Overall result | ☐ Normal ☐ Abnormal |

## How to do each check

Before you test anything, tell the people in the building. If the alarm is connected to a monitoring company or the fire service, tell them too, so that nobody mistakes the test for a real fire.

### Panel indicators

Look at the control panel. The power light should be on, and no fault, disabled or test light should be on. Panels differ, so check the panel's manual or ask your fire alarm company what normal looks like.

### Detector function test

Test only if you have been shown how, and use the method in the panel's manual, usually a tester made for that type of detector. Never use an open flame.

- **Normal:** every detector you test responds, and the panel shows the right zone.
- **Partly faulty:** one or more detectors don't respond. Write down which ones.
- **All faulty:** none of them respond.

### Bell or siren

Sound the alarm with the test method in the panel's manual, and check that it can be heard in the areas it covers. When you finish, make sure the panel is back to normal and that no zone is left disabled.

### Notes

Write down anything else, such as the zone of a fault, repeated false alarms, a low battery warning, or a detector that is damaged or covered.

## How often to check

This template is set to monthly. How often each part must be tested, how many detectors to test, who may do it and what must be recorded depend on your country and the type of building, so check the fire safety rules that apply to you.

Inspection and servicing by a qualified company are usually a separate requirement.

## If something is wrong

1. Mark it on the checklist and write down the zone and the location. A photo helps.
2. Tell the person responsible for fire safety right away, because a fault can leave part of the building without protection.
3. Call your fire alarm company. Don't disable a zone or silence a fault just to stop the buzzer.
4. Ask whether your rules require extra measures, such as a fire watch, until it is fixed.
5. Check it again after the fix and record the result.

## Use this checklist in MintCheck

1. In **Checklists**, click **Add checklist** and pick the fire alarm template. Its items and monthly schedule are filled in, and you can change them before you save.
2. In **Assets**, click **Add asset**, pick the fire alarm template and link the checklist.
3. Click **Print QR** and put a label on or next to the panel.
4. Workers scan the label, answer the items and mark the result **Normal** or **Abnormal**. They can attach photos.

An **Abnormal** result stays **Unresolved**, and the site dashboard shows how many problems are still open.

An outside company usually fixes a fire alarm fault. When it has, either run a re-inspection or have an administrator open the record, click **Mark as resolved** and write down what was done. The record then shows how it was resolved, when, by whom, and the note. If the fault turns out not to be fixed, click **Reopen**.

To keep the company's phone number at hand, add it to the asset as a custom attribute. Workers can see it on the **Asset info** screen.

MintCheck is free for up to 5 assets with no credit card, so you can try this with your fire alarm and a few other assets.

## Common questions

### How often should a fire alarm be tested?

This template uses a monthly check as a starting point. Required intervals differ by country, by type of building and by part of the system, so check the fire safety rules that apply to you.

### Does this checklist meet fire safety regulations?

It is a starting point, not a statement of compliance. Compare it with the rules that apply to your building and add the items they ask for.

### Should I tell anyone before testing a fire alarm?

Yes. Tell the people in the building, and tell your monitoring company or the fire service if the alarm is connected to them. Tell them again when the test is finished.

### Who can do this check?

Someone on site can usually read the panel once they have been shown how. Testing detectors and sounders needs instruction, and your local rules may say who can do it. Servicing is for qualified people.

### What if the panel shows a fault but everything seems to work?

Treat it as a problem. Write down what the panel shows, tell the person responsible and call your fire alarm company. A fault light can mean that part of the system won't work when it is needed.
